The Consumers Council of Canada is obviously concerned about the turn that Canada-US trade talks have taken. The unwarranted US tariffs and necessary reciprocal actions will impact Canadian producers and retailers, and drive up costs for consumers across everything from groceries and consumer packaged goods to vehicles, appliances, and housing.

While the Government of Canada works to stabilize the country’s trade relations, the Council remains committed to ensuring the consumer voice is heard in legislation and regulation. We’re working with the federal and provincial governments to advocate for stronger consumer protections in financial services, telecommunications, grocery retailing, housing, and home energy use.

The Council also reminds Canadians that Canadian products sold in Canada are not subject to tariffs and are subject to Canadian regulation and enforcement oversight.
